Mini reviews: graphic novels are go!

Good morning everyone!

I am here with some more graphic novels that I’ve read recently. My kids are REALLY loving graphic novels, and I’m more than happy to get some more, second hand, to explore with them!

The Last Council – Kazu Kibuishi

Emily and her friends think they’ll find the help they need in Cielis, but something isn’t right. Streets that were once busy are deserted, and the townspeople who are left live in crippling fear. Emily is escorted to the Academy where she’s expected to compete for a spot on the Guardian Council, the most powerful Stonekeepers. But as the number of competitors gets smaller and smaller, a terrible secret is slowly uncovered–a secret that, if left buried, means certain destruction of everything Emily fights for.

My Amulet adoration continues! I really love this series. Every new addition gets me more and more into it! This instalment continues the brilliant story and introduces us to a WHOLE new set of characters, which bring about some BIG questions and concerns for Emily and her crew! This is full of deceit, reuniting and discovering some truths! I thought the new characters brought loads to this… I just hope they’re allies and not enemies! Now I need to track down book 6!

Evil Emperor Penguin – Laura Ellen Anderson

Far away in the icy wastes of Antarctica lives a warm and cuddly, kind-hearted penguin who only wants to do good in the world…NOT! This is no ordinary penguin! This is EVIL EMPEROR PENGUIN and he’s going to take over the world!

I’m a massive fan of Laura’s novels (Amelia Fang and Rainbow Grey) and this is a graphic novel I’ve been trying to get my hands on for AGES. When I finally got my hands on it, I was over the moon! I read it eagerly and it was a whole load of fun! I loved how each of the different ‘episodes’ built the big story, but were each real fun! The story builds so brilliantly and brought me lots of laughter! I adore Laura’s illustrations so much and these guys are awesome. An evil penguin and his crew… I adore Eugene!

Estranged – Ethan M Aldridge

Edmund and the Childe were swapped at birth. Now Edmund lives in secret as a changeling in the World Above, his fae powers hidden from his unsuspecting parents and his older sister, Alexis. The Childe lives among the fae in the World Below, where being a human makes him a curiosity at the royal palace. But when the cruel sorceress Hawthorne seizes the throne, the Childe and Edmund must unite on a dangerous quest to save both worlds—even if they’re not sure which world they belong to.

This is one that I had never heard of, but it came on my radar random through a recommended reads list! I bought it on a whim and honestly, I thought it was brilliant! Like I said, I’d not heard much about, but that I thoroughly enjoyed. Definitely aimed at UKS2/KS3. This tells the story of two ‘brothers’ living lives the other wants. I loved the fantasy elements to this and the talk around family. Loved the sister and Whick so so much! Properly gripping and who doesn’t love a good above/below magic kind of story! I wonder if there’s more in this series…

And that’s it for today! I’ve had a productive graphic novel reading month so far, so I’m sure I’ll be back with some more graphic novel mini reviews in the next week or so!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE if you have any recommendations for graphic novels for me to buy that would work for my Y6s, I’d love to hear them!
